This post continues my recent series about Planning Poker by focusing on when to estimate. Because Planning Poker is a consensus-based estimating approach, it is most appropriate to use it on items that require consensus. That is, I recommend using Planning Poker on product backlog items rather than on the tasks that make up a sprint backlog.

What is scrum poker or agile poker in general?

Scrum Poker, also called planning poker, is a gamified technique, mostly used for estimating effort or relative size of development goals in software development. In Scrum Poker, members of the group make estimates by playing numbered cards face-down to the table, instead of speaking them aloud. The cards are revealed, and the estimates are then discussed.

'Scrum Poker for JIRA' is a plugin for interactive agile estimation and planning. It is a both a JIRA and mobile-integrated solution for planning poker. During sprint planning meetings Scrum Masters can start voting sessions in JIRA Agile's backlog view, while developers can vote using their mobile phones.

JIRA Plugin Installation
  1. Log into your JIRA instance as an admin.
  2. Click the admin dropdown and choose Atlassian Marketplace.
  3. The Manage add-ons screen loads.
  4. Click Find new add-ons from the left-hand side of the page.
  5. Locate Scrum Poker for JIRA via search.
  6. The appropriate add-on version appears in the search results.
  7. Click Try free to begin a new trial or Buy now to purchase a license for Scrum Poker for JIRA.
  8. You're prompted to log into MyAtlassian. JIRA Agile begins to download.
  9. Enter your information and click Generate license when redirected to MyAtlassian.
  10. Click Apply license.
  11. If you're using an older version of UPM, you can copy and paste the license into your JIRA instance.

  1. In order to use Scrum Poker the developers must download the mobile app 'Scrum Poker for JIRA' from Google Play Store or Apple Store.

How it works

The figure below shows how the 'Scrum Poker for JIRA' plugin works.

To try the plugin, walk through the following steps:

  1. Install the JIRA plugin and ask the developers to download the free 'Scrum Poker for JIRA' mobile app in either Google Play or Apple App Store.
  2. As a Scrum Master (SM) visit the Agile Board / backlog view of a selected project. We recommend using a projector during the estimation meetings.
  3. Click on 'Scrum Poker' dropdown -> 'Start voting session':
  4. Open the mobile apps and choose 'Start planning with JIRA' from the menu, then scan the QR code that appears on the projector screen.
  5. Once all developers are connected, click 'Close' in the popup window and then select a story from the backlog.
  6. Click on 'Start estimation' in the story details section:
  7. A popup window will appear in JIRA with a list of the connected developers. Developers will receive an invite for voting on the selected story.
  8. By selecting 'GO' they can choose a number from the cards:
  9. Once everyone has submitted a vote (blue cards with a check mark) the SM can click on 'Next' and the votes will appear:
  10. On the last screen the SM can check or modify the final result. This will also be shown on the mobile phones.
  11. After finishing the estimation of one story, click on the next story and repeat from step 6. above.
  12. When the session is over choose 'Stop session' from the 'Scrum Poker' dropdown.
